The Government of India, under the banner of its ambitious India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), has approved the establishment of 4 new semiconductor manufacturing units across Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. This strategic initiative, backed by a financial outlay of approximately ₹4,600 crore, aims to boost domestic electronics manufacturing capabilities and generate over 2,034 new skilled jobs.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the green light for these state-of-the-art Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) units as part of the drive to make India self-reliant in semiconductor production.

The newly approved semiconductor units will be developed in collaboration with domestic and international technology partners to support various key sectors such as automotive, EVs, defense, mobile devices, AI, renewable energy, and ICT infrastructure. India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) – A Major Leap Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat

Launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the India Semiconductor Mission aims to establish a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem within India. With a total budget of ₹76,000 crore, the program is designed to:

  • Reduce India's over-dependence on imported semiconductor components
  • Enable chip fabrication, design, testing, and packaging facilities at scale
  • Attract leading global players to establish units in India
