Introduction to Hobbies

Hobbies are activities we do for pleasure during our free time. They help us relax, learn new skills, and express ourselves. Unlike schoolwork or chores, hobbies are things we choose to do because we enjoy them. My hobby is reading books, and in this essay, I will share why I love it and how it benefits me.

Hobbies can be of different types - creative hobbies like painting and dancing, collection hobbies like stamp collecting, outdoor hobbies like gardening, and many more. In India, common hobbies among students include cricket, dancing, drawing, singing, and reading. Whatever hobby we choose, it should make us happy and help us grow.

Did you know? The word "hobby" comes from "hobbyhorse", a toy horse popular in England in the 16th century. Over time, it came to mean any favorite pastime activity.

How I Discovered My Hobby

I discovered my love for reading when I was in class 4. My grandmother gifted me a beautifully illustrated storybook on my birthday. At first, I only looked at the pictures, but slowly I started reading the words. The magical world of the story captured my imagination. From that day, I began reading more books.

My school library became my favorite place. Our librarian, Mrs. Sharma, helped me choose books suitable for my age. I started with simple storybooks and gradually moved to more challenging ones. Now, I can finish a 200-page book in just two days!

Why I Love Reading

Reading is like taking a journey without leaving your room. Here's why I love it so much:

  • 📚 Adventure: Books take me to magical lands, space adventures, and historical places
  • 🧠 Knowledge: I learn new words, facts, and ideas from every book I read
  • 😊 Companionship: When I feel lonely, my books are my best friends
  • 🌈 Imagination: Reading helps me imagine things beyond my daily life
  • Time-pass: It's the best way to spend holidays and free time

My Reading Routine

I have developed a proper routine for my hobby:

  1. Morning: I read for 20 minutes after waking up (this helps me start my day positively)
  2. After school: I read one chapter of my current book while having snacks
  3. Weekends: I visit the local library to exchange books and spend 2-3 hours reading there
  4. Before bed: I always read for at least 30 minutes before sleeping

During summer vacations, I participate in reading challenges at my school library. Last year, I read 25 books in two months and won the "Young Reader Award"!

Types of Books I Enjoy

Over the years, I have developed preferences for certain types of books:

Book Type Examples Why I Like Them
Adventure Stories Famous Five, Secret Seven Full of excitement and mysteries
Mythology Stories from Mahabharata, Ramayana Teach me about Indian culture
Science Fiction Jules Verne's books Imagine future technologies
Biographies Wings of Fire (APJ Abdul Kalam) Inspire me to work hard

Benefits of My Hobby

Reading as a hobby has helped me in many ways:

Academic Benefits

  • Improved my vocabulary and language skills
  • Helped in writing better essays and answers
  • Increased my general knowledge
  • Developed my concentration power

Personal Benefits

  • Made me more creative and imaginative
  • Helped me understand different cultures
  • Taught me moral values through stories
  • Reduced my screen time on mobile/TV

Challenges I Face

While reading is wonderful, there are some difficulties too:

  • Sometimes I get so involved in a book that I forget to complete my homework
  • Good books can be expensive to buy (I solve this by using libraries and book exchanges)
  • Finding quiet time to read in our busy household can be challenging
  • My parents worry I might strain my eyes by reading in dim light

How I Balance Hobby and Studies

My parents always support my hobby but remind me to maintain balance. Here's how I manage:

  1. I never read during study hours
  2. I use reading as a reward after completing homework
